California DMV Practice Test 2026

California DMV Written Test — What to Expect in 2026

The California DMV knowledge test is required for every first-time driver's license applicant, and it remains the single biggest reason people fail on their first visit. The test draws from the California Driver Handbook — roughly 46 multiple-choice questions for first-time applicants (shorter for renewals), and you need to answer about 80% correctly to pass.

Key Facts at a Glance

• First-time applicants: about 46 questions, pass line ≈ 80% (roughly 8 wrong answers max)
• Application fee: $45 for a Class C license
• The written test is offered in 30+ languages, including Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Vietnamese
• The official Driver Handbook is only published in 9 languages — so many language communities have no official study material in their own language

Why Most People Fail the First Time

It's rarely a lack of driving knowledge — it's unfamiliarity with how the DMV phrases questions, plus the specific road-sign vocabulary that only appears in the official handbook. Practice tests close exactly this gap by mirroring the real question format, so the wording feels familiar on test day.

How to Prepare in Half the Time

• Read the handbook once, then switch to active recall with practice questions
• Focus on the questions you get wrong — that's where the real learning happens
• If English is your second language, practice in your strongest language first
