Two Very Different Contractor Licences

This bank covers the two states most of our users test in, and they work differently. In Florida, Chapter 489 splits contractors into Certified (a state licence issued through the Construction Industry Licensing Board, valid statewide) and Registered (a local licence valid only in the jurisdiction that issued it) — knowing which is which, and what "contracting" legally means, is core exam material. In California, the CSLB requires four years of journeyman-level experience, a criminal background check and fingerprinting, and two exams: a Law & Business exam and a trade exam.

What the Exams Test

  • Licensing structure — Certified vs Registered in Florida, the licence classifications, and the composition of the state board
  • Legal definition of contracting — the line between a licensed contractor's work and work that requires a licence
  • Penalties — what happens when someone contracts without a licence, in both states
  • Financial responsibility — bonds (California requires a $15,000 contractor's licence bond), insurance, workers' compensation and how a licence is renewed or reinstated
  • Continuing education — Florida requires 14 hours of CE per renewal cycle, including mandatory subject hours

Where People Lose Points

Three areas cause most failures. First, the Certified versus Registered distinction in Florida — the exam returns to it repeatedly, in different forms. Second, the penalties and consequences of unlicensed contracting, which are statutory and precise. Third, fees, bonds and renewal mechanics — initial licence fees, bond amounts, delinquent renewal rules and what continuing education actually counts. These are all recall questions, which is exactly what practice rounds fix.

How to Prepare

Answer in rounds, read each explanation even when you are right, and re-do the misses. Aim for three consecutive rounds at 90% or better before you book your exam.
