The Hazmat Endorsement Test, in Short
The H (Hazardous Materials) endorsement knowledge test is 30 questions and you need 80% — 24 correct — to pass. It comes on top of your CDL, and before the DMV will add the endorsement you also have to clear the TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, good for five years). Almost nobody fails on driving rules; people fail because hazmat is a paperwork-and-placard test, and the answers come straight out of the federal regulations.
What the Test Actually Covers
- Classification (49 CFR Part 173) — what makes a liquid flammable (flash point at or below 140°F) versus combustible (above 140°F up to 200°F), and the divisions inside Class 1 explosives, Class 2 gases and Class 9 miscellaneous
- Communication of hazard (49 CFR Part 172) — placards, ID numbers on the vehicle, shipping papers and the emergency response telephone number
- Loading, parking and attendance (49 CFR Part 397) — where you may and may not park, and when you must stay with the vehicle
- Security awareness and the threat assessment (49 CFR Part 1572) — what is required of a driver seeking the H endorsement
Where People Lose Points
Three things catch out first-time takers. First, the flash point thresholds — flammable versus combustible is a memorisation question and the two numbers are close together. Second, placard versus ID number — knowing which goes on the vehicle and which goes on the shipping paper. Third, parking and attendance rules, where the distances and the exceptions matter more than the general rule. All three are pure regulation recall, which is exactly what practice questions are good at.
How to Prepare
Read the hazmat section of your state CDL handbook once, then work the questions in rounds: answer, read the explanation, and re-do everything you missed. Aim for three consecutive rounds at 90% or better before you book the real test — the real one only gives you 30 questions, so six wrong answers is a fail.
